History

The Asian Cultural Experience, one of Atlanta’s most popular multi-cultural events, celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2003. A decade before, Atlanta architect Tony Smith, along with pediatrician Victor Lui and several others, approached the Atlanta Botanical Garden with a vision of Atlantans of Asian descent sharing their art, music, dance, cuisine, sports and games with other Atlantans. This small group of dedicated volunteers planned and presented the first Asian Cultural Experience at the Atlanta Botanical Garden in 1993.

Since then, the annual family-oriented event has grown in scope and audience. The success and enthusiasm of the original core of volunteers has attracted new participants from Atlanta’s Cambodian, Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Malaysian, Filipino, Thai, Taiwanese and Vietnamese communities. Each year, thousands of visitors enjoy two days of music, dancing, delicious food, fine art, native crafts, fashion shows and much more.

As the components and audience for the Asian Cultural Experience have grown, so have community and corporate support. Dr. Lui was the event’s first sponsor, and has continued in that role for each subsequent year.
